Making a Display Table out of Box Store Pine!
It’s been a while, but we’ve been busy! Learn more about one of the things that was keeping us so!
What is it?
At our charming little nook in Logan Village Mall, Noblesville, Indiana, we decided it was time to shake things up! Our snug store had a vast open space just begging for some love. With all our handcrafted treasures neatly hanging on French cleat shelves, we thought, “Why not give this space a personality?”
We tried plopping down a collapsible table with a sunny sunflower tablecloth—adorable, right? But alas, it just didn’t scream ‘family flair’ or ‘handcrafted goodness.’ Time for creativity to kick in! Our budget might have been as tight as a bug in a rug, but that didn’t stop us. A local big box store beckoned us in, and we left with the classic hero of building materials: good ol' Pine 2x4x8s!
With some elbow grease and a bit of imagination, we transformed these humble planks into a stunning table that we believe showcases our spirit. And just to sprinkle some extra pizzazz, we raided our scrap stash for some Black Walnut, crafting splines and dowels that give it that “wow” factor!
Guess what? The mall owners are buzzing about the table, and people have been flocking to check it out! Who knows? This beauty might just become our next product! 🌻✨
What did we learn?
Oh my…where to begin and how to keep this brief. Here goes:
We learned how to do splines
Making splines is easier of you have a steam bender
Small splines are harder to work with and can break easily
When in doubt, make a jig
Big box store 2x4s have a MC between 9% and 18%
Black Walnut and Pine complement each other very well
Pine sands faster than Black Walnut, so be careful when sanding surfaces that contain both species.
Dominos do add strength to joints
Finally: Adam makes more mistakes in one project than some woodworkers make in 10.
In Closing…
God always inspires us. We appreciate the drive and determination He provides to take chances and try something new, different, and sometimes risky. The tables have been a hit and this has fueled desire to start taking more chances on some of the other table ideas we have. Stay tuned!!!
